Cricket is the most famous game in the modern era. After football cricket is the second most popular game in the world. When we talk about cricket, three things come into mind bowling, batting, and fielding. All three department of this game has equal priority. When we saw a cricket match on TV, after every ball the speed of the ball is a popup on the screen. Sometime we may have the common query like how bowling speed is measured in cricket? What are the methods in cricket to measuring speed?

Nowadays cricket match telecast uses a lot of technology. The advanced cameras and hi-tech devices conduct the game more accurately. It also multiplies the viewer experience.

In the history of cricket, we can find some fastest bowlers. Morne Morkel, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson, Shoaib Akhtar, Brett are some fastest bowler of all time. In this article, I am going to discuss the mechanism and process of measuring the bowling speed in cricket. So let’s get started.

How bowling speed is measured

There is two method to measure the bowling speed.

  • Radar Gun
  • Hawk-Eye

Radar Gun

Are you scared of hearing the word gun? Well, feel safe it doesn’t fire any bullet.

This technology is not new. It has been using for measuring the speed of the car. Mainly Police uses this Radar gun to measure the speed of moving vehicle.

How Radar Gun works

This device consists of a transmitter and receiver. Radar Gun sends a radio wave. If the wave hits any object in the path it reflects back. In cricket, it is a cricket ball that comes in the path of the emitted radio wave. So radio wave reflects back and receives by the receiver. Then the bowling speed is calculated by using a principle called Doppler Effect.

In most of the cricket match, the Radar Gun installs on the side screen. There is no effect on the Gun if the bowler changes the end of their bowling.

Advantages of Radar Gun

  • Exact speed is determined with the help of a radar gun
  • It measures the speed instantly

Limitations of Radar Gun

  • It measures the speed of the ball when bowler just releases the ball. But it is not the actual speed of the ball because when the ball pitches in the ground and reach batsman the speed decreases. This is because some external factors like air resistance restrict the speed of the ball.
  • The air registrant can also reduce the speed of the ball when it is traveling. So the speed is not accurate.

Hawk-Eye

Hawk-eye is a popular sports technology. It has been using in various sports like tennis, football, cricket etc. Actually, this technology was made for tracking the missile path and brain surgery.

Paul Hawkins developed this technology in the UK. In 2001 the system was first implemented for television purpose in cricket.

How does Hawk-Eye work

The Hawk Eye technology system consists of six high-performance cameras. Normally the Hawk-Eye cameras are positioned on the underside of the stadium roof. The cameras are installs at a different angle so that it can track the ball from a different angle.

This system starts tracking the ball path when the bowler releases the ball from hand and keep tracking until the ball goes dead. This system collects the data from 6 cameras. Then this system makes a 3D image from the collected data.

Hawk-Eye gives a clear representation to the viewers of the direction and length of the ball travel towards the stumps. This technology also helps 3rd umpire to check whether the ball is in the line of the stump when it hit the pads of the batsman or not. This technology plays a vital role in the DRS LBW review.

Advantages of Hawk Eye

There are some advantages of the Hawk-Eye system

  • It measures the accurate speed of the ball
  • The system also measures the direction and swing of the ball

Limitations of Hawk Eye

Although this is an advanced system, it is not bullet-proof. There are some limitations.

  • The Hawk-Eye is not infallible. It is accurate within 3.6 millimeters of its range.

Conclusion

We started our discussion from how bowling speed is measured in cricket? A wide range of technology has been using in cricket to make it more accurate and. It also gives the viewer a clear representation of the ball path. However many time this system comes under controversy. Many sports exports complained about the system. Many cricket commentators expressed their doubts about the bowling speeds of many bowlers in the past. This has a controversial history in the past. Beyond of these many controversies the technologies are still using for measuring the bowling speed. Because there is no better technology than this for measuring bowling speed.

Technology is everywhere. You may have heard about this term firmware. But immediately the question arises in mind what is firmware. If you have not unfamiliar with the term don’t worry, most people have no idea about it. Let’s know what it is actually.

As we are living in a technology world, it is common that we have to familiar with the technology-related terms. We are using thousands of devices like remote control, toaster, washing machine, microwave oven, and a ton. I bet that you have heard or use the two-term “Hardware” and “Software” a thousand times in your life.

We can tell at least one or two lines about hardware and software. Although different people have a different definition of these terms the moral is the same.  We are using many devices in our daily life and all the devices have must hardware and software.

However, there is something more than just hardware and software. There is a term called Firmware. Let’s define the term Firmware.

What is Firmware

Firmware is a piece of software program that pre-installed on the devices. Basically, Firmware was installed by the manufacturer of the device. It defines the core functionality of that device.

If this concept passed over your head don’t worry, let’s discuss it through a simple example.

Let’s take a simple example.

You have seen the screen of the washing machine where some options are shown. Just click on any option and go. These functionalities are programmed by the manufacturer of the washing machine. This is the pre-installed software program and it directly communicates with the hardware component. This is a good Firmware example.

Almost all electronic devices except the simplest contain some firmware. The hardware components come into play through the Firmware. Basically, the Firmware is installed in non-volatile memory like ROM or Flash memory.

As a normal user, we can’t access the memory area of the Firmware. In the normal case, we can’t modify or override the Firmware.

In most of the devices, there is no need to change the Firmware during the lifetime. There is some firmware that is permanently installed and cannot be changed after manufacture of the device.

But if you have deep knowledge in this field you can do the modification or override it. You may have heard about the term Firmware hacking.

Some devices allow user for updating. Update of firmware adds some extra options on that device and fixes the bugs.

Difference between firmware and software

To say frankly, there is no official distinction between firmware and software. For our understanding, we can conclude some idea about this.

Software generally considered as high-level programs while the firmware is low-level programs.

The software is mainly stored in a user accessible memory area, while the firmware is located in an inaccessible memory area embedded in the hardware.

A software update may occur frequently but a firmware update is very rare.

What is the firmware update

In the old days, there is no update for device firmware. As the growth of technology, we need some extra functionality on the same device. So manufacturing company provide some update of firmware.

Some devices prompt the message of the firmware update and some devices don’t prompt.

The installation process of the firmware update varies from device to device. Basically, this updating is done by the manufacturer company. It adds some extra options to the existing device. It also fixes bugs in the device.

There is no way to set the device in auto-update mode for the firmware. We have to check manually whether there is any pending update for the particular device or not. For some specific device, you can check for the update in the manufacturer’s website to download firmware updates.

Keep one thing in mind that the firmware update does not shut down while the update is being in progress. An incomplete firmware update will corrupt the firmware, which can seriously damage the device working process.

What is firmware hacking

Some tech expert people create an unofficial version of firmware for many hi-tech devices. They reverse engineered the built-in version of the firmware. This is called firmware hacking.

They install the software on the device remotely and change the functionality of the device. Hacker can remotely access the device through the internet and can fulfill their bad intention. Mostly it happens when firmware update. So follow the right instruction in the user manual of the device to update the firmware.

You can do one simple step to overcome this. Just check the model number of the device you want to update the firmware and the new firmware update model number.

A few years back, many CCTV camera in the USA were hacked by firmware hacker. It proves that firmware is in the range of hacker.

Some firmware hack has also focused on injecting malware into devices like smartphone USB devices etc.

Conclusion

We have started our discussion from what is firmware and now we are in the conclusion stage. Firmware is the background hero of the devices. Some device manufacturer provides update gradually and some are not. If you find any device prompt firmware update then go for it. Follow right steps to update the firmware and keep your device safe from firmware hackers.

The car industry is one of the most evolving industry nowadays. Now we are living a sophisticated life. But with the rapid increase of automobiles, the number of the accident also increased. You can see the news of accident everyday media. That’s why passenger safety is the most priority for car Manufacturing Company.

When it comes to the safety of passenger one name comes to mind “Airbag”. It is a revolutionary feature ever invented in the transportation industry.

After hearing this word several questions comes to mind. What is Airbag, How it works, like a ton?

In this article, I am going to cover all the things related to Airbag. So let’s go

What is an Airbag?

An Airbag is a type of safety device fitted into the vehicles. It is a balloon-like shape designed to inflate quickly and protect passengers from the collision of the vehicle. It is also known as the supplementary restraint system(SRS).

Airbags act as a cushion and restrict the head and chest from hitting the hard surfaces of the dashboard in the car.

Who invented Airbag?

If you search online who invented Airbag, you’ll find different people are credited with inventing airbags. But the credit goes to John W. Hetrick of Pennsylvania in 1951.  It was granted a US patent #2,649,311 by the United States Patent Office on 18 August 1953.

Although a German engineer named Walter Linderer filed an airbag patent a few months before Hetrick, it was granted after Hetrick’s. You can find more history of Airbag from Wikipedia.

How Airbags works

Airbag systems mainly consist of multiple sensors, a control unit. When a car hits something, it starts to decelerate very rapidly, means it loses its speed.

One of the sensors in Airbag is an accelerometer. An accelerometer is a device that measures acceleration. It suddenly comes into action and detects the change of speed.

Other sources like wheel speed sensors are monitored by the airbag control unit. When a specific condition is detected the control unit triggers the Airbag. Normal speed deceleration doesn’t generate enough force to do this.

How airbag works

Every Airbag contains chemical propellants and initiator devices that are capable of igniting the propellants.

When specific condition detected by the control unit it sends a signal to activate initiator devices. The chemical propellants are ignited then the Airbag filled with Nitrogen or Argon gas.

The inflation of Airbag takes between 20- 30 milliseconds. It takes less than half-time for us to blink an eye, which requires between 100 and 200 milliseconds.

The motion energy of the passengers is fully absorbed by the Airbags. It is a onetime use device because all the chemical propellants were burned to inflate the bag.

Types of Airbags

Most people think that Airbag has no specific types and it only available for front side of the driver. This is true for the old cars that are designed to save the driver and only gives an airbag that deploys from the dashboard and steering wheel of a vehicle.

But the motor industry has evolved a lot and now you can find many types of Airbags. Here are some of the common types of airbags.

Front Airbags – This is the most common type of airbag and can fount in all modern cars. Usually, there are 2 front airbags are there. One is for driver and another one is for the passenger sitting in the front seat.

In the United States, all cars should have dual front airbags and it’s mandated. During the collision, the driver’s front airbag comes from the steering wheel, and the passenger’s airbag (who is sitting on the front seat) deploys from the dashboard.

Some cars have weight sensors that detect the weight of the passenger and deploys the airbag accordingly. If a child is sitting on the front seat then the car will not deploy airbag in order to save the child from airbag’s force injury.

Side airbags – Side airbags usually situated in the seat or the door. These types of airbags reduce the risk of head injuries during side-impact crashes. This also helps when the vehicle begins to roll after a collision.

Knee airbags – Many automakers like Toyota gives knee airbags to reduce injury and improve safety. These airbags are usually situated just underneath the steering wheel and the glove compartment. It can protect both driver or passenger from suffering knee injuries and stop knees from hitting the hard surface.

Conclusion

Airbags are may be dangerous to small children and people who are seated too close to the steering wheel or dash when an accident happens. It won’t provide any support for them. Many people were killed due to some defect in the Airbag system.

From the above discussion, you now know how an airbag works and how many types of airbags are there.

However, this technology saves thousands of lives in the last decade. This is a remarkable life-saving technology. No doubt it will also save lives in feature also.
